CBHS, MTSU graduate drowns in middle Tennessee river on Labor Day
PERRY COUNTY, Tenn. (WMC) - A Memphis man drowned in the Buffalo River on Labor Day.
Officials said Brandon Archer, a recent graduate of Middle Tennessee State University and a Memphis native, drowned around 1 p.m.
Archer’s family says he graduated from MTSU in May with a degree in leisure sports and tourism and began working with Memphis Athletic Ministries immediately thereafter.
Archer, who would’ve turned 22 years old Sept. 3, played football for 16 years, according to his family. Archer graduated from Christian Brothers High School in 2015 before attending MTSU. His family says he was supposed to start coaching a flag football team with MAM this week.
“He is a tremendous man with purpose from Memphis trying to impact these kids on a daily basis,” said President and CEO of MAM Randy Odom.
Odom remembers Archer as being a light for the students he coached.
“He had a smile when he walks in to the gym and just lights up the entire place,” said Odom.
Archer’s mother says he was a strong swimmer but his foot got caught in fishing wire. She says there were no signs warning about trap wires or other dangers.
One day after his death, Archer’s alma maters, MTSU and CBHS, shared their condolences on social media.
