Bright School fourth-grader Nina Lail on Saturday led a contingent to help the Tennessee River Rescue trash pick-up on Suck Creek.

Nina is a member of the Shine Bright Club, which helps non-profit organizations in doing good for the community.

“I have always disliked seeing trash in and around the water because it's terrible for the environment and the animals that live there,” said Nina. “I have chosen to help the Tennessee River Rescue because they help to keep the river clean for the animals.”

With more than 15 electing to help the effort, roughly 20 large bags of trash were collected from along the riverbank. Bright Head of School, O.J. Morgan, was among the attending supporters of the cleanup.

“Thank you to all who came. We couldn’t have collected that much without everyone’s help,” said Nina.

The Tennessee River Rescue has an annual clean-up event on the first Saturday in October.  Visit tennesseeriverrescue.org for more information on next year’s clean up.

Fourth and fifth graders participating in Shine Bright this fall are well into their community service projects. Shine Bright teaches and empowers kids to put empathy into action. Students are paired with a mentor from the school and given curriculum to identify their passions and who they want to help and create an actionable plan with start-up money to give back to the non-profit of their choice. Students are selected based on an application process in the fall and spring.
